Modern Ancestor is a psychedelic rock and experimental artist based in Revere, Massachusetts - a small town just outside Boston. His debut album ‘Bardo’, releasing this September, will see a limited run of 300 vinyl records featuring cover art by Venice Beach- based artist Daniel Militonian (Dunkees).
Featuring artists like KRUPA 8000 from the band Lunar Dunes, work on the ‘Bardo’ album began at The Village Studios in Los Angeles. The experimental artist recalls: “In that first recording session, we tracked live drums to a click track on 2-inch analog tape with no other music. I figured we'd better have some drums at least to keep things together.” He then travelled to Weesp, a small town outside of Amsterdam, and began working on the rest of the album during a psychedelic experience.
The project fell into place throughout the hallucinogenic recording session, says the artist: “When our engineer Vincent Helbert pressed ‘record' on the tape machine, it suddenly felt like we were hearing the instruments for the first time. They sounded fresh. We were lost in the act of creating without expectations. I said, ‘I feel like a Modern Ancestor doing something so old but so new’. The process felt like what the Tibetans call a ‘bardo’.”
‘Bardo’, a Tibetan term, loosely describes the halfway state of existence between two lives on earth. (Please note, the artist does not condone drug use - the purpose of disclosing this information is simply to remain faithful to the album’s origin story.)
Influenced by an eclectic mix of artists from The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd to J Dilla and Sun Ra, as well as nature, art and travel, Modern Ancestor finds inspiration in his own creative process: “Getting lost in the creation of a record, from start to finish, is what drives me to make music."
